TEAM HURRICANE INVITATIONAL CAMP
Every spring, the Team Hurricane Basketball Academy hosts the Team Hurricane-Global Squad Invitational Skills Camp - a triumph for Bermuda youth basketball. Team Hurricane Founder and President, Doug Reed, hands the reins to coaches of Alexander Basketball Academy, a well-regarded basketball institution experienced in bringing international players to U.S. college coaches. The camp is designed to scout and recruit, invited NCAA level talent from here in Bermuda.
Held over the course of three days at Bermuda College and Warwick Academy, players are challenged to push past their physical and mental limits. Our student-athletes learn fundamental training techniques including proper footwork, speed, agility, ball-handling, and shooting. By camp’s end, Team Hurricane players have the tools necessary to train at a high level.
Participation in our invitational camp can lead to summer opportunities that include:
1) Enrollment in the Alexander Basketball Academy's Global Squad Summer Intensive Training Program. The Global Squad Experience provides international student- athletes with an opportunity to get recruited by U.S. colleges and universities, by putting them in front of college coaches, while providing elite training required to play at the next level. The Global Squad has an excellent recipe for success when it comes to helping international basketball players get recruited to play in the United States. In four years they have helped nearly 40 players get recruited by colleges, universities, junior colleges and top prep schools.
Once on The Hill School campus, a coaching staff that consists of professional players, current and former NCAA basketball players train the young men. Global Squad also has several NCAA college coaches and strength training experts on staff. Such a diverse staff makes for a unique environment for Bermuda student-athletes to learn the game and improve.
2) The Global Squad International Showcase. Held the first week in July at the renowned preparatory academy, The Hill School, in Pottstown, PA. The Global Squad International Showcase enables Team Hurricane players to play in front of college coaches looking for student-athletes for their schools.
This past summer International Showcase had over 40 coaches in attendance, including those from Division 1 institutions like: Arizona State, Marquette, South Carolina,George Mason, VCU, Seton Hall, George Washington, Drexel, Quinnipiac, Dayton, San Diego, Fairfield, UNC Greensboro, Longwood, Towson, NJIT, Mt. St. Mary's, U of Milwaukee, and James Madison.
STUDENTS FIRST EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
Team Hurricane’s Students First Educational Program is organized and overseen by Registered Psychologist, Dr. Mellisa Gibbons Tankard of HARTT Services and former Project Director of Higher Achievers Afterschool Program in Washington DC.
Consistent with established programs that focus on developing the scholar athlete, Students First provides direct academic assistance for students in the form of academic screening, individualized tutoring (based on perceived needs) and guidance towards other professionals that can assist with their long term career goals on and off the basketball court. This program has merit and potential and can assist Team Hurricane coaches with providing updated information as to the overall potential of the student when recruiters express interest in a player.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL CAMP
For the third year in a row, Team Hurricane Basketball Academy returned to Syracuse University & the Jim Boeheim Basketball Camp (August 1 – August 5, 2016). This experience once again enabled the Team Hurricane Basketball Academy to promote the college experience to its young people while also providing Team Hurricane players the opportunity to learn the game the same way the renowned Syracuse University Orange squad is coached and, in the process, helped the sport of basketball grow in Bermuda. This year, 11 student-athletes attended, which included for the first time ever 3 student-athletes from our youth division (ages 7 thru 13). Colby Mapp (NBA Division) was named Most Improved Player, while Colby and camp teammate Sean Tucker vied played in the championship game on the camp’s final day, as did Joshua Dears (NCAA Division). Jalen Currin came away as 3-on-3 Champion (NBA Division).
As one can see, we provide many life-enriching opportunities for our student-athletes. To keep up to date with our programs and news, please don't hesitate to contact us to be included on the mailing list for the Team Hurricane Review Newsletter.
